FOXBORO — The Rev. John J. Hever Jr., 74, died Sunday in the Metro West Medical Center, Framingham.

Born in Salem on June 13, 1927, he was the son of the late John Sr. and Elinor (Roache) Hever. He earned a bachelor's degree and a graduate degree in divinity from St. John's Seminary in Boston. He had attended the Boston College Graduate School, where he earned a master's of education in counseling psychology. He had also attended Yale University's School of Medicine drug dependence institute. He had resided in Foxboro for the past 29 years.

Father Hever had served as chaplain at Medfield State Hospital, Medfield. He had retired in June 1987 from as director of Naval Reserve Chaplains, and was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal at his retirement ceremony. He retired as a US Naval Reserves Rear Admiral.

He had served as a staff chaplain, Naval Reserve Readiness Command, Region 1. He had also served as an associate pastor in three parishes in Boston, and as administrator of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Airways at Logan Airport, Boston.

Father Hever was an honorary member of the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association and was a past chairman of the Foxboro Council of Human Services. He had been a certified member of the Association of Catholic Chaplains and a member of the Military Chaplains Association. He had served as chairman of the Human Rights Committee for MSH.

He leaves no immediate survivors.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Church, Carpenter Street, with Bernard Cardinal Law officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
