He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical school in March 1861. On March 28, 1863 he was mustered in as Assistant Surgeon of the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in that capacity until April 25, 1865, when he was promoted to Chief Surgeon of the 215th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He served in that duty until he was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1865.
On June 24, 1867 he joined the United States Navy, being commissioned as an Assistant Surgeon. He was promoted to Passed Assistant Surgeon on February 26, 1873, Surgeon on May 1, 1879, Medical Inspector on June 8, 1895, and was appointed Medical Director of the United States Navy on September 24, 1899. In April 1903 he retired with the rank of Rear Admiral.
During the Spanish-American War he commanded the Medical corps at the New York Navy Shipyard. Ships that he served on include the steam sloop "USS Dacotah", the sidewheel gunboat "USS Wasp", the sidewheel gunboat "USS Monocacy", the screw frigate "USS Wabash", the wooden screw steamer "USS Essex", "USS Independence", the cruiser "USS Baltimore", and the cruiser "USS Philadelphia".
On August 19, 1910 his wife, Mary W. Hawke, filed for a US Army Widow’s Pension (Application #947372 Certificate #709070, PA).∼Medical Director- USN
