Johanna Roden Vyborny

December 10, 1937 - August 12, 2010

Johanna Roden Vyborny of Albemarle County, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Hospice House. She had pancreatic cancer.

Johanna is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Wallace of Palmyra, Virginia, and Catherine Vyborny of Red Lodge, Montana; and four grandchildren, Shawn, Seth, Virginia, and David Wallace. She was married to Lee Vyborny for 35 years before they divorced.

Johanna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Robert and Naomi Roden. She graduated cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh and received her Masters Degree in Library Science from the Carnegie Library School. During her library career, she served as the head of the Government Documents Department at the University of Pittsburgh Library, the Director of Public Services for the Westerly, Rhode Island, Public Library, and the head librarian for the Stonington, Connecticut, Free Library.

After moving to the Charlottesville area in 1978, Johanna and her family lived in Ivy and then moved to the Boonesville area of Albemarle County. In 1990, Johanna joined the staff of the Earlysville Animal Hospital, where she worked as a receptionist and unofficial staff photographer until she became ill in early July of this year.

Johanna was a self-taught photographer whose sensitive black-and-white images of nature and pets were exhibited in juried shows in Lynchburg and Abingdon. Her ability to capture the essence and spirit of cats, dogs, and horses put her in demand as a companion animal photographer and many pet lovers in the area will continue to cherish the animal portraits she patiently created.

Johanna was quietly steadfast in her love for and support of her family and friends. She was willing to listen, liked to laugh, and stood ready to help others whenever needed. Her gentle presence will be greatly missed.

A memorial service was held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville, with a reception to follow at the Omni's Jefferson Ballroom.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be given to an animal welfare organization of your choice.
