Samuel W. Alford was born near Burlington, Vt., January 13, 1823 and died in Garden Grove, Calif., February 18, 1915, aged 92 years, 1 month, 5 days.

He lived to young manhood near Plattsburg, New York. He made his first trip west at the age of nineteen. In 1849 he went to California. Returning with his mother and sister in 1852 he settled on a farm north of Plattville where he lived nearly fifty-nine years. On October 28, 1858 he married Elizabeth Fisk of Plattsburg, New York. She died June 8, 1910. There were born to them six daughters and one son. One daughter died in infancy, one at the age of 29 and the son at the age of 19. There remain four daughters—Miss Amoret Alford of Port Byron, Ill., Mrs. Luraet Howland of Edgewater, Colorado, Miss Laura and Miss Nettie of Garden Grove, California. There are five grandchildren—Charles, Laura, Martha, Stephen and Ruth Howland.

Mr. Alford came to Garden Grove three years ago where he has lived a quiet Christian life. The funeral services were held at the Free Methodist church, the pastor, Rev. Mr. Anderson, being assisted by Rev. Mr. Thomas of the Baptist church and Rev. Mr. Morgan of the Mennonite church. Interment was at Westminster cemetery Orange county, California, February 20, 1915.
