Son of Ellis S. Ragsdale & Zelpha Smith; grandson of Britton Ragsdale. It is believed that Eda Jeffery married Britton Ragsdale and is either the step-mother or sister-in-law to Ellis S. Ragsdale & Britton J. Ragsdale. After Britton's death, she married John Milligan II of Triadelphia, (West) Virginia. Ellis Ragsdale & John Milligan had such a strong friendship that both would name their fourth child (sons) after each other, John Milligan Ragsdale and Ellis Ragsdale Milligan.

Married Elmina Francis "Frankie" Roberson, Bet. 1858-1861 in Erath Co., TX. Two daughters:

1) Mary Elizabeth (1862-1945) who married Sterling Davidson "Starl" Long on July 27, 1881.

2) Margaret Milligan Addeline (1864-1950) who married William Floyd Kelley/Kelly.

About 30 years old when he died in the Civil War at the Battle of Mansfield; 31st Texas Infantry.

Note from David Hill, Louisiana Division Commander, Sons of Confederate Veterans: "Found John Ragsdale on the Confederate Roster with this spelling:
Ragsdill, John M. TX 31st Cav. Co. D Pvt.

"Judging from the date of death, April 8, 1864, John Ragsdale was most likely killed at the Battle of Mansfield, the majority of the battle casualties buried at Mansfield Cemetery do not have headstones. They are buried in unmarked graves in the same plot."
