Death: Died April 25, 1878

Husband of Fanny Miner Davis
Daughter of Henry Davis and Mary Ann Pollard
a semi-invalid
daughter Louise was devoted to her mother, who required constant medical attention.

John and Fannie, descended from families that emigrated from England in the 1600s.
The Henry Whitfield House in Guilford, Connecticut, is one of the oldest houses in America, dating from 1639—just 19 years after the arrival of the Pilgrims

John was a textile merchant.
As he prospered he moved the family from Chelsea to Gramercy Park (where one of Louise's playmates would be Teddy Roosevelt) and finally to a comfortable brownstone uptown on West 48 Street and Fifth Avenue—two blocks away from the Windsor Hotel.
Andrew Carnegie met John Whitfield through a mutual friend and enjoyed his company.
He made frequent visits to the Whitfield home; during one of those visits, he met daughter Louise.
They shared a love of riding horses and he invited her often to Central Park.
During these rides, she let it be known she didn't want to marry someone who was already successful, but rather help a husband to succeed.
He let it be known that he had no intention of holding on to his fortune, but rather wished to give it all away.

In 1848, when Mr. Whitfield was about fifteen years old, he entered the employ of Lyman Cooke A Co., in the notion business.
The firm was at that time located at GO Broadway, and did a business of about $250,000 a year.
From the position of boy he rose by degrees until, in 1858 he was admitted to partnership, and the firm became Dowd, Baker Whitfield & Co.
In 1870 Dowd & Baker retired from active interest, remaining as specials, and the firm became Whitfield, Powers & Co.
Mr. Powers died in 187B.
Mr. Whitfield died in 1878, leaving a widow and three children.
