Alfred John Worsdell was the son of Jonathan Worsdell (1849-1905) and Jane nee Harris (1847-1931). Both parents were born in Falmouth, Cornwall, where they married in February 1871 and where Alfred John was born in 1872.

The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1875 and were living in Illinois in 1880.

He was the oldest of five children (not including three others who died very young). His siblings were Beatrice (1873-1936), Harry (1876-1901), Ernest (1878-1949), and Lucretia (1882-1964).

He married Carrie nee Kent in late 1901 or, more likely, 1902. She filed for divorce from her first husband, Lyndon M. Comstock, in August 1901 in Indianapolis. Their son Alfred John Worsdell, Jr., was born in March 1903 in Brooklyn, New York.

Alfred made periodic return trips to England, apparently related to his work as a leather merchant.
