Thomas Carroll and his twin brother, John D. Carroll, were orphaned in 1840 when their parents died in an epidemic. Their older brother Isaiah Carroll was appointed as their guardian. In 1849 they sold their land in TN. They moved to Missouri in the 1850s.

Thomas Carroll married Martha Pettigrew Whitson, the daughter of William Whitson Jr. and Harriet Witherspoon, in TN about 1846.

They had eight children: William Samuel (Sam), Harriet Elizabeth, Mary Louise (Luiza), John Wesley (Wes), Susie, Jimmie, Ella Jane (Lovey) and Martha Bloomfield (Bloom). Sam married Volumnia Alford. Harriet died at age 2. Luiza married A. Hurley Brown and died at age 24. Wes married Lillie Burke, but died at age 23 less than a year later. Susie married Will Heckart. Jimmie died as an infant. Ella Jane married Hiram Stalder. Bloom married James Henry Oliver.

Obituary of Thomas Carroll, copied from the original by Genie Allen (great granddaughter):

Died--Sept. 2, 1897 at the home of his son, W.S. Carroll, aged nearly 72 years. Mr. Carroll was born in Hardin Co., TN, in June 1825. He was one of a family of 9 children. Was married to Martha Whitson at the age of 21 years and emigrated to Misssouri, since which time he has been a resident of Ralls and Audrain counties. He was a long sufferer from the disease which ended his life, tumor of the stomach. He leaves an aged and feeble wife, a son and three daughters to mourn a husband and father's loss. Two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Stalder (Ella Jane) and Mrs. Bloom Oliver reside in Washington, and were debarred the privilege of minstering to a father's needs. Mrs. Carroll will make her home with the other daughter, Mrs. Susie Heckart in Montgomery County (MO).

Mr. Carroll was always a busy man, active and energetic, a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind friend and neighbor, cheerful and jovial.

During his residence in Tennessee, he was a member of the Methodist church, and after he came to Farber to reside, himself and wife cast their lot with the C.P. (Presbyterian) church and continued so until death desired that he live no longer, but to enter into rest. We know in whom we trust and that "He doeth all things well."
