Mary Ellen's brother, Samuel Albert Hazen, was raised by Rebecca Hazen Davis Barr, another sister of John T. Hazen and Eleanor Hazen White (above); Samuel Albert Hazen married Emily Lanning.
Mary Ellen married William Smith, son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Egbert Smith, on 19 April 1865 in Brookville; there were no children to this union. Elizabeth Egbert was the daughter of Isaac Egbert and Mary Lanning, d/o Isaac Lanning.
William and Mary Ellen Hazen Smith spent their married lives together in Brookville until his death on 6 Jan 1915.
On 17 April 1926 Mary Ellen died at Fayette Memorial Hospital in Connersville at age 77. Funeral services conducted by Rev. J. M. Larmore at the Brookville M. E. Church, Brookville, Indiana. She was buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville.
Mary Ellen was a lifetime member of the Methodist church in Brookville and was active in several charitable organizations including Pocahontas and the Pythian Sisters in Brookville.
