FRANKLIN, Ind. - A. Maurine Beck, 95, formerly of Bates Avenue, Oneida, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, in the Franklin United Methodist Healthcare Facility.
Born in Rochester on July 26, 1915, she was the daughter of the Rev. John M. and Lida Ebright Beck. Miss Beck was a graduate of the University of Rochester with a major in history and an minor in German and received her Master's Degree from Niagara University. She had resided in Oneida for many years.
Prior to her retirement in 1975, Miss Beck taught social studies at Oneida High School for thirty-two years, also serving as chairman of the department. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, serving as trustee, financial secretary and church organist, a member of the Church Women United of Oneida, a charter member and past president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a member and past president of the Zonta Club, a member and past chairman of the advisory board of the Oneida Salvation Army, a board member and past chairman of the Hazel Carpenter Home, a member of the Oneida-Kenwood-Sherrill Migrant Committee, a life member of the National Education Association and volunteered for fifteen years with Meals on Wheels.
Maurine was named "Teacher of the Year" in 1964 by Syracuse University, was awarded "Roses to the Living" in 1966 by the Oneida Rotary Club and received State Department of Education grant to study in India during the Summer of 1966.
Maurine was an incredible woman, sharing her world travels with so many in the Oneida area through her presentations for her students and various civic organizations; she was an educator, a church and community leader, a volunteer, a church organist and a mentor to many students and her family.
She is survived by her seven nephews, Timothy Beck of Morris, Ill., Jonathan Beck and Daniel Beck, both of Indianapolis, Ind., Randal Beck of Decatur, Ill., Nathan Beck of Aurora, Colo. and Ronald Beck and Howard Beck, both of Webster. She was predeceased by her two younger brothers, Rev. J. Franklin Beck and Alden E. Beck.
Graveside services will be held at the family plot in Valley View Cemetery this forthcoming June of 2011, where her family will gather with friends to share remembrances of her. Contributions, in her memory, may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Sayles Street, Oneida 13421 or the Oneida City School District Foundation, Box 327, Oneida, NY 13421. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, 260 Main St., Oneida, NY 13421.
