Florence was a plain, hard working, little farm girl but she clearly defined loving, caring, kindness, and giving of her self as few of us have ever seen. There on the farm she had lived a very sheltered life. She had always lived with her parents when she met James Stout. (James was the man mothers warn their daughters about.) He was a good looking, slick dressing, hard drinking, gambling man who though only of himself. His concerns were only of how things effected him personally. He showered her with attention and she fell in love with him. On 23 Apr 1931, she married him. In 1934 they had a son James Willis Jr., on March 18, 1935 a son Jerry Leon Stout, and on September 06, 1936 a daughter Joanne Stout in Seneca, Missouri. James drank and gambled and was gone most of the time. Three months after Joann was born (December 1936) he left the family and got a divorce. She had three children under three years old and in the depth of the great depression she could not find work. There was no one to help. She was forced to into living off her parents. She felt very bad about using what little resources her aging parents had and she decided to move the family to California in the hopes to get work. She borrowed buss fair from her family and went to Sactamento, CA. The first night there the family slept in the park across from the court house and it did not get any easier. They moved back to Missouri so her mother and older brother Jim could find work in the cannery. When they got there the wages were 50 cents an hour. Florence decided they could not live on that wage so they decided to go back to California. Florence bought a old wore out Chevrolet. Older brother James drove the car back. He had never driven before. The trip was exciting. Car Broke down near Needles CA. She sent Jim and Jerry to Needles to buy part and they some how managed to fixed it. Some place near Vicidila Ca. and Kingsly CA. They ran out of money and gas. They decided to pick cotton to make money. They gave Joann a pillow case and Florence and James had a 100 # sack and they picked cotton. Joann never got her pillow case filled. Her fingers were bleeding and got blood on the cotton. Joann was about 11 or 12 years old. They got enough money to get back to Madesto.

We always shared everything. I use to wonder what was wrong with my mother. When we were living in Keyes CA., A man and woman lived next door an they had 7 children kids had red hair and freckles. Joann was 13. Her mother always had a garden and canned vegetables after work. The state sometimes would give out staples like macaroni. One evening she cooked a bunch of macroni and put her last two jars of tomatoes in the macroni. The macaroni swelled up big and there was a lot. Joann said to Jerry "God we are going to have a lot to eat tonight." When it was done she said come on lets go share this with the people next door they don't have anything. We didn't get much there were nine of them and only three of us. That was the way my mother was. She shared what she had. (source Joann Stout daughter.)
Florence never remarried. Life was very hard for her and her children. Jim never came around or provided support of any kind. She kept the family together. Some times living in tents, Hobo camps or what ever shelter she could find. Her and the children picked fruit and she worked in the cannery at night. In 1949 the family was working in the peaches and she managed to save enough to buy a tent. She got a vacant lot and pitched the tent and the children started school This was in Keyes, Ca. This was about 2 years before she died. She died a when she was a little over 46 years old. The body was just worn out. (source Jerry Stout son).
When Florence died, the family dissolved. James stayed with people they had rented from, Jo Ann lived with his Aunt Lottie and Jerry went to stay with his father. (source James Stout jr. son)
