Jeremy Alan Pinkerton, 22, died on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center due to injuries sustained as a result of an automobile accident last Thursday afternoon, August 12, 2010. He was traveling on Interstate 66 westbound on his way to Capon Springs, West Virginia, for a family gathering, when he hydroplaned while driving through a heavy summer thunderstorm, lost control, spun across the center median, and was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer.

Jeremy was airlifted and stabilized in Winchester, then brought home to University of Virginia Medical Center by Pegasus. At University of Virginia, his treatment team, led by Dr. Neal Kassell, determined that his devastating head injury was non-recoverable. Life Net coordinated the organ donation process and Jeremy was blessed to be in the top 1% of donors, donating his heart, lungs, liver, kidney and more - helping up to 1000 people. Family and Jeremy's closest friends joined together at the University of Virginia Medical Center for the last three days of his life.

Jeremy attended the Covenant School and graduated from Charlottesville High School. He was one semester from completing his computer science major at the University of Maryland. He found a home with the Maryland sailing team, serving as the team's president last year. He had a passion for sports, especially soccer, which included playing for Covenant and the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville Albemarle. He loved skiing, wakeboarding, and sailing, and was happiest on the water and the snow. He was involved in fundraising through special events for the adaptive ski program. His logical approach to learning served him well as he was gifted in computer networking and security. He built computers for himself and family members from scratch, and served as the computer troubleshooter for many. Having just received his security clearance to work for Helm Point Solutions, he was on the launch pad for a wonderful future. As was evident by his final days in the SICU, he was deeply loved by his many friends and family members, who hoped and prayed for a miracle. He leaves a Jeremy-sized hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Jeremy is survived by his parents, Bro and JoAnn Pinkerton; his sisters, Katie and Liz; his grandparents, George J. and Kathy Vensko; his aunts, uncles, cousins, and special friends.

A celebration service with reception following was held at First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, Virginia, Saturday, August 21, 2010.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jeremy Pinkerton Memorial Fund in Jeremy's honor, details of which are available at www.JeremyPinkerton.org. Gifts from the fund are planned to Pegasus, SOCA, the Maryland Sailing Team, the Wintergreen Adaptive Ski program through the Blue Ridge Double Cross (helping those with special needs at Wintergreen), and, hopefully, the establishment of a scholarship for bright, creative students with a passion for computer science.
