J.C. was born in Missisippi. By the mid to late 1880s he had moved to Lamar County, Texas where met Sarah "Sallie" Westbrook. The two were married in Paris, TX on 16 Nov 1887. Sallie and J.C. had five children, including a son who died in infancy. They made their home in Lamar County, TX until Sallie's death in 1901. Not long afterward, J.C. moved with his daughters to
Indian Territory, now Comanche/Stephens county area of Oklahoma, where he worked as a farm hand for several different families through the years.
By 1917, J.C.'s daughter, Mandie, had married Tom Falls and was raising a growing family. They were farming land a few miles west of Fletcher, Oklahoma. J.C. lived with them, helping Tom on the farm until J.C.'s death on 6 June 1917. He was buried at Fletcher Cemetery in Comanche County, Oklahoma.
The original headstone for J.C. was replaced with a new one by one of his granddaughters in about 2005. The old headstone is still present, though no longer in the ground.
