Winant Bennett enlisted as a private in Company F, 90th New York Infantry Regiment on 24 Oct 1861. He was thirty one years old. He was promoted to Hospital Steward on 21 Nov 1861, and shipped out with the regiment to Key West, Florida, in January 1862. Bennett was granted a disability discharge from the 90th New York on 16 Jun 1862.

Bennett returned to Brooklyn, and reenlisted on August 22. He joined Company G, 139th New York Infantry as a private on September 9. The details of his service with this regiment are unknown.

After the war, Bennett settled in Brooklyn, where he worked as a clerk in a drug store.
