James Neil McKay was born in Newtownards, County Down, Ireland in 1847. After his family settled in Wisconsin, he was one of the first homesteaders in Phillips County, Kansas as a young man about 1872. Later he became a blacksmith in the town of Logan. He made the Land Rush in to Oklahoma with his family in 1893. Settling in Pond Creek, OK, he built a rooming house that he called the "Central Hotel.
