Son of John McCullough Stitt and Elizabeth Mott. Husband of Hannah Smith.

William was an intriguing rascal, and sort of the black sheep of the family. He got his father to give him $1,000, and left to seek his fortune. For some years he was seldom heard from, and when he did surface it was to ask for more money. When his brother George was about 20 and studying law in NYC, his father sent him on a wild goose chase to Cincinnati to find William who had sent a plea for funds from there (think he claimed to be very ill). Poor George had a horrendous journey by coach and boat, and when he got to Cincinnati he couldn't find William. He had no way to get in touch with his family, was running out of money himself, and didn't know whether to stay or head back home.
