Classical archaeologist and art historian. After studies at Girton College, Cambridge, and the British School at Athens, she came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as an assistant in 1906. She became assistant curator in 1910, associate curator in 1922, and curator of Greek and Roman art from 1925 to 1948 (and honorary curator after retirement), a position that made her among the most eminent and influential historians of ancient art of her time. She would teach at Columbia, Yale, Bryn Mawr, and Oberlin. An icon of a 20th century woman scholar, she wrote important scholarly works, some in collaboration with her sister Irma Richter, an artist and scholar, and many general interest books that popularized Classical art widely.
