PLAINS - Funeral services for Donald Lee Speer, 61, of Plains were held Friday, April 1, at the Coffelt-Bunch Funeral Chapel in Plains with Pastor Michael Wakefield of the Clark Fork Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed by burial in Plains Cemetery with military graveside rites by Horse Plains VFW Post #3596.
Mr. Speer died of cancer Monday, March 28, 1994, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Wash.
He was born May 16, 1932, to John and Mirtie Marie Speer at Howard, Kan. He grew up and attended school in Kansas before enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving 20 years. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
He and Effie Tift were married Dec. 10, 1954, at Clarkston, Wash. In 1974, Donald became a firefighter at Fairchild Air Force Base, where he served until the time of his death.
He was a member of Horse Plains Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3596 and the American Legion Post #129 at Paradise. He enjoyed motorcycle riding as a hobby.
Survivors include his wife, Effie, of the family home in Plains; two daughters, Dawnya Ward and Cynthia Ward, both of Spokane, Wash.; four sons, Michael Speer and Matthew Speer, both of Spokane; and Donald Speer and John Speer, both of Aurora, Ill.; four sisters, Ollie May Kresge of Delta, Colo.; Pearl Branstetter, Sedalia, Mo.; Carolyn Swift, Wichita, Kan.; and Louise McGarrah, Rogers, Ark.; four brothers, Orie Gene Campbell, Wichita, Kan.; Alvin Campbell, Mead, Wash.; Thomas Campbell, Augusta, Kan.; and Victor Campbell, Rogers, Ark.; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
