Joseph L. Nanna, an adjunct instructor in English at Canisius College, died Jan. 5 in his Amherst home after a lengthy battle with hemochromatosis. He was 61.

Born in Johnstown, Pa., he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English education from Canisius College and completed his doctorate in curriculum development and humanities at the University at Buffalo.

He taught for 15 years at Canisius. Since 1991, he also was an adjunct professor at Buffalo State College and Medaille College, teaching composition and critical writing. He also taught reading and GED preparation at the Orleans Correctional Facility and was director of education for the Job Corps in Orleans County.

Early in his career, he taught English for eight years at Niagara Catholic High School in Niagara Falls, where he also coached the tennis and golf teams, moderated the ski club and was the drama coordinator.

An avid bicyclist and tennis player, he also came from a musical family and had a deep appreciation for classical music.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, the former Nancy Techmeyer; and three daughters, Jennifer Peckey, Nicole Daniels and Lesley Zlatev.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. March 14 in St. Mark's Catholic Church, 401 Woodward Ave.
