Obituary

The Creemore StarCreemore, OntarioWednesday, April 7, 1993Page 14, Columns 1 – 6Obituary Dimple Augusta Hamilton

Dimple Augusta Hamilton (nee: Royal) born April 9, 1894 in Nottawasaga Township and after a full and rewarding life, Dimple Augusta passed away on Feb. 18, 1993, in Collingwood General and Marine Hospital.

One must being to remember "Gus" by first imagining the changes that have occurred in our world in the past 99 years. For one to be able to change with the times and take advantage of all of life's experiences requires a great strength of character and a profound faith. Gus had both.

Dimple Augusta was born a second youngest in a family of seven children. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters; Frances, Robert, Isbela, Stanley, Florence Elizabeth and Alexander and by her husband Clifford (Nip) Hamilton of Hillsburg. The Royal Family farmed in Creemore and many of our family stories involved the Royal children and their escapades. One fact was always commented on and made very clear to us….Dimple Augusta was the lady of the family. She retained this distinction all through her life. She carried herself with a great deal of grace, dignity, and decorum. Perhaps she came by this trail honestly as her grandmother was born in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland before emigrating to Canada.

When she met her husband Hip, he was operating his own grocery store on the main street of Hillsburg. After marriage, they settled down in Hillsburg to run the store. They were very happy albeit childless. Dimple and Clifford opened their home to a nephew, Dale Steele, and helped him to go to high school and prepare himself for a successful career with the CPR. Following the death of her husband, Dimple Augusta continued to run the store until around 1968 when she sold it and returned to Creemore.

Dimple Augusta supported the Presbyterian Church and was a faithful member. In 1911, she was rewarded a diploma for correctly reciting the whole of the Shorter Catechism. She also was one of the original and continued supporters of the Scott Mission in Toronto, founded in Hillsburg by her friends, Mr. and Mrs. Zeidman. A member of the Big Heart Club in Creemore for approximately 16 years, she enjoyed spending time socializing with her contemporaries.

Di mple Augusta remained in her own apartment caring for herself with the much appreciated aid of her friends, Mrs. Christina Linton and Melba Bradley until she moved to the Blue Mountain Manor a few months prior to her demise.

The Funeral was held in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Creemore, Feb. 20, 1993, at 3 p.m. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Creemore Union Cemetery. Life came full circle for Dimple Augusta. She was born just above Creemore overlooking the Mad River valley and will rest in a similar location near friends, family and former neighbours. We will remember her as a strong, independent woman, who lives a full life and retained her quiet dignity until the end.
