Elmer L. Zimmerman

GIRARD -- Elmer L. Zimmerman, 75, of Girard, died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center.

He was born July 25, 1924, at Hiattville, to Oscar Joseph and Hannah Mathilda Johnson Zimmerman.

He attended Fairview School near Farlington and graduated from Hepler High school in 1942.

Mr. Zimmerman served in the 70th Armored Infantry Battalion in the European Theater during World War II.

He married Leona L. Franklin on May 1, 1948, at Girard. She survives of the home.

He was a lifelong farmer and stockman.

They moved to Girard in 1962.

Mr. Zimmerman was a member of the United Methodist Church, Girard.

Additional survivors include a son, Randal E. Zimmerman of Hepler; a daughter, Pamela L. Anastassiou of Pueblo, Colo.; two brothers, George Zimmerman of Girard, and James Zimmerman of Lawton, Mich.; a sister, Aileen McCullough of Arma; and a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Zimmerman, and two sisters, Hazel Zimmerman, and Alice Werholtz.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Girard Cemetery, with the Rev. Lucille Barb officiating.

Burial will follow the services. Friends may call after noon today at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, Girard.

Leona L. Zimmerman, 79, of Girard, died at 4:56 p.m., Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Girard Medical Center in Girard.

She was born on March 18, 1929 at Walnut, Kansas to Lloyd and Elvina (Goff) Franklin.

She grew up in the Walnut and Hepler areas and attended country schools.

She and Elmer L. Zimmerman were united in marriage on May 1, 1948 at Girard. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2000.

She and her husband farmed near Hepler and Farlington for many years. While they moved to Girard in 1962, they continued farming and raising cattle in the same location until her husband's death.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed baking and spending time with her children and granddaughter.

Leona was a member of the United Methodist Church at Girard.

Survivors include her son, Randy Zimmerman, and his wife, Barbara of rural Hepler; her daughter, Pam Anastassiou, and her husband, Toli of Flagstaff, AZ; her granddaughter, Kayla Zimmerman of Pittsburg; three brothers, Gilbert Franklin and Donald Franklin, both of Girard and Everett Franklin of Yates Center; and one sister, Jessie Zimmerman of Girard.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Vernard Franklin; and three sisters, Dorothy Miller, Pauline Zimmerman, and Peggy Franklin.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 10, 2008 at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with the Reverend Steve Cole officiating.

Burial will follow in the Girard Cemetery.

Friends may call the funeral home after 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Farlington United Methodist Church Building Fund, and these may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 518 West St. John Ave., P.O. Box 258, Girard, KS 66743.
