Born to Basque immigrant parents from Spain, Martin and Marcelina Dolagaray, Anita Celia Gomes grew up and received her education in Fresno, graduating from Fresno Tech. She along with her two sisters, Maria and Josephine, worked with their father at the Santa Fe Basque Restaurant and Hotel, which he owned. Over the years, there have been several Basque families which operated the historic restaurant across from the Santa Fe Railroad Depot in downtown Fresno.

They made their home in the LaVina district of Madera County for many years where their dairy and farming operations were located before their retirement.

Anita and Alvin were very supportive of the community. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Fresno Basque Club, an active member of St. Joachim's Parish of Madera, a member of The Madera Golf and Country Club, a member of the Fresno County Cabrillo Club #10, The C.P.D.E.S. of Fresno, and The Red Hat Society. In earlier years, Anita was involved in the California Dairy Princess Pageants.

Anita passed away on Monday, May 7, 2007 at her residence in Madera following a short illness. Surrounded by her loving family she peacefully slipped away into the arms of her beloved Saviour.

She is survived by her devoted husband Alvin of Madera, her daughters, JoAnn and husband Dr. Roger Rau and Joyce Gomes Spina and husband Gary, and by son-in-law George Crafton all of Madera.
