Robert was the son of Ranulf of Alfreton and Norton in Derby. He was also known as Robert FitzRanulf, the Saxon form of 'the son of Ranulf.' His son was William, and his line leads to the Chaworths.

Robert FitzRanulph de Alfreton founded Beauchief Abbey sometime before 1176. His motive has been explained as the atonement for his involvement of the murder of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. He also made the gift of the church of Osberton to the canons of the church of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert of Wyrkesop.
