Manito, IL - Beryl D. Hilst, 77, of 204 N. Washington St., Manito, passed away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 24, 1932, in Manito, the son of William F. and Thelma A. Clauser Hilst. He married Nora Mae Golden on Sept. 13, 1953, in Manito. She preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2010.

His parents and one brother, Daryl Hilst (2005), also preceded him in death.

Beryl worked at Caterpillar Tractor Co. for 41 years in the grounds maintenance department. He retired in December of 1991.

He served in the United States Armed Services with the Air National Guard from 1951 to 1954.

He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church.

Beryl enjoyed setting up old train sets and collecting Manito memorabilia.

He joined the Forman Fire Department in April 1961 and was a driver for the Forman Ambulance from August of 1999 until he retired from both in January of 2002.

Surviving are two sons, Dennis Hilst and Kevin Hilst, both of Manito. He has one former daughter-in-law, Terri Hilst of Morton. One sister-in-law, Judith Hilst of Bloomington, also survives. He has two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Interment will be in Meadow Lawn Cemetery in Manito. Following the graveside service, military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 561 of Manito.
