Attended Madison University (possibly called Hamilton Literary and Theological Institute) in Hamilton, Madison, NY, from 1836 - 1844.

Baptist Missionary. Founded the Shwegyin Karen Mission in Burma. From July 1846 to Feb 1882 worked tirelessly, losing two wives (both buried in Burma) and suffered several bouts of jungle fever (which claimed his second wife).

His third wife wrote a small book about his life, called History of the Shwegyin Karen Mission, published in 1894.
