At the turn of Twentieth Century German born Sergeant Charles L. Schauwecker was a well known figure within the ranks of the New York Police Department. He was in charge of the training of new police recruits. Earlier, in 1893, he testified at the trial of the famous anarchist Emma Goldman. She had given a speech in Union Square, part of which was in German. Charles Schauwecker was there, perhaps undercover, taking notes. Emma Goldman was tried for inciting a crowd to riot although no riot occurred as a result of her speech. She was convicted and served ten months in jail. Charles Schauwecker retired from the NYPD in 1905.
