Berry was the Circuit Clerk of Fayette County, Illinois 1826-1856 & Adjutant General 1834-1839. He was a talented artist of Illinois & painted portraits of state offficers & legislators, commissioned by the Illinois General Assembly to copy portraits of Washington & Lafayette in the Washington Capitol to hang in the Springfield, Illinois capitol 1839. He was the brother-in-law of Governor W.L.D. Ewing.
