VERLA BLANCHE SAXON ARTHUR, 85, died on Tuesday, October 5, in Houston, following a lengthy illness. She was born to Eula and Floyd Saxon of Goose Creek, who settled there so that Verla's father could help to build the Humble Oil Refinery.

She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, and later earned a certified public secretarial accreditation from the University of Houston. She married James M. "Jimmy" Arthur, and the couple spent many happy years in Houston until his death.

Verla was a business woman, gifted in math and accounting. She served for more than 20 years at Federated Development Company and earlier for John Mecom's oil company.

She was predeceased by her husband and parents; her brother Floyd C. Saxon, Jr.; brother-in-law W.C. "Dub" Rogers; and nephew Larry W. Rogers. Surviving her are her sister Floydella Rogers and nephew Randy C. Rogers; sister-in-law Louise Saxon; nieces Gay Nell Rogers, Sidney Saxon, and Lauren Rogers; and nephews Brad Saxon, Brandon Rogers, and Ryan Rogers; cousin Wyllene Abbott, and family friend Diana Craft. Verla felt blessed to be part of her husband's extended Arthur family including brother's in-law R.V. and wife Geri Arthur, and L.C. Arthur; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services at 11:00 a.m. will be held at Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist Church, 304 N. Pruett St., Baytown, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. The Rev. Cy Helm of First Methodist Church of Houston will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted by Mr. Allen Houk, also of First Methodist Church, at the Cedar Bayou Masonic Cemetery. Verla was a member of both churches at different times of her life.

Memorial donations can be made to Cedar Bayou Grace United Methodist or First Methodist Church, 1320 Main St., Houston.
