Mary was born a New Yorker. She was the first of three daughters of Forrest M Anderson and Grace Barnum.
She got her master's degree from Columbia University in education, I believe. During WWII she was director of a private school for mentally disturbed children and had in her charge some students from England, far from the dangerous bombings of London. As a thank you the British government gave her a scholarship for a summer at Oxford University.
Mary got her PhD in psychology from the University of Minnesota. She went to Kansas to teach at Fort Hays State College. Through mutual friends in the psychology community she met Jim Simpson, a PhD candidate in psychology at the University of Kansas. They married in Hays on July 31, 1954, and moved to a large house in Topeka. With them was Jim's daughter by his first marriage. Mary taught at Washburn University and worked at the Boys Industrial School.
After Jim got his doctorate, they moved to Corvallis, Oregon. While Jim taught at Oregon State University, Mary worked in Salem at Hillcrest, the state school for delinquent girls, for several years and then at the Oregon State Hospital. She was innovative and started the first group counseling sessions for sex offenders. She also assisted with the movie "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" when it was filmed at the hospital.
In 1968 she divorced Jim and moved to Salem, Oregon, where she died 20 years later.
