Family tradition says that Thomas Tate was the overseer of a large estate in Lincolnshire, England.

In 1853 he and his wife left England and sailed to North America, landing in Quebec, Canada. They traveled with their daughter Maria Dawson and family. The Dawsons remained in Canada for several years before locating in Clinton County, Iowa.

In 1880, 93-year-old Thomas Tate was living in Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa with his daughter Maria Dawson and her husband Thomas.

Stone could not be located in the fall of 2011. The Tate stones are located near the tornado memorial.
