Revolutionary War figure. Ann's parents were John and Ann Clark Cooper. On 23 September 1739 (O.S.), she married James Whitall. In 1748, they built a brick mansion on the banks of the Delaware River in New Jersey. During the Revolutionary War, the Americans built a fort - Fort Mercer - on the Whitall's property. On 22 October 1777, the enemy attacked, under the Hessian commander Donop, but were defeated. Ann stayed in her home, and according to legend, was nearly struck by an errant cannon ball. That night she acted as nurse, helping the wounded men. After the Americans evacuated and the British came in November 1777, the Whitall's were forced to leave their home. They did not return until April 1778.
Despite taking care while yellow fever raged across the river in Philadelphia, Ann, along with two sons and two grandchildren, became ill with the fever and died. The Whitall house still stands today.
