T. J. Channer Dead
Thomas J. Channer died at Richland, Neb., on the morning of July 20, 1909, aged 70 years, 2 months and 27 days. The remains were brought to Cozad and on Wednesday, July 21, the funeral was held from the home of his son-in-law, D. Harrison, 10 miles northeast of Cozad, to the Bethel cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. C. Harper.
Deceased was born in Cleveland, O., April 23, 1839. With his parents he went to Canada during his boyhood, and later he went to Iowa. Here he married Mahala A. Allen, October 3, 1856. To this union eight children have been born seven of whom are living. He enlisted in Co. L. of the 5th Iowa Cavalry, serving 17 months.
He moved to Nebraska in 1887, locating in the eastern part of the state. In Feb. 1889, he came to Dawson county, locating on his farm, making this his home, although he was away for a time in California.
He was converted in his childhood, uniting with the Baptist Church. After his residence had been made in this community he united with the Evangelical church at Bethel.

Channer, Thomas J. Age 24. Residence Marshall County,Iowa nativity Ohio. Enlisted March 28,1864. Mustered March 28, 1864. Transferred to Company L, Fifth Veteran Cavalry Consolidated, Aug. 8, 1864.
Mustered out Aug 11 1865
Based on muster T.J. participated in following battles:
Siege of Atlanta
Lovejoy Station
Jonesboro
Nashville
Macon
Enlisted into Co L Iowa 5th Cavalry.
Company L was nicknamed "Naughton's Irish Dragoons"
Transferred to Co L Iowa 5th Consolidated Cavalry (Iowa 5th Cavalry was separated at times into detachments to cover multiple assignments.)
