Jim was born to Louis and Mary Ellen Kochheiser on December 19, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio.

His family moved west to Fresno when Jim was a young boy. He graduated from McLane High in 1963 and went on to study Industrial Technology, Electrical Division at Fresno State University earning his degree in 1969. One of his first jobs after graduation was in sales with Westinghouse.

In 1975 Jim began his long career in the insurance business with Equitable Life. He later founded James F. Kochheiser Insurance Services, Inc. where he served the Insurance, Investment & Employee Benefit needs of many valley businesses and individuals. He was a graduate of the American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania earning the Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations.

A Life Member of the National Rifle Association, he was a member of the California NRA Members Council where he was honored with the outstanding volunteer award in 2008. For over 25 years he was a member of the East Fresno Kiwanis Club.

Jim and his wife Judy started Project Bore Snake and for five years raised funds to purchase and ship bore snakes to U.S. Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan which aided them in cleaning their military firearms.

Jim loved watching any kind of auto racing, especially NASCAR. As a young man he raced Motocross Cycles. He was gifted at building things, especially metal fabrication and spent many hours in his workshop building anything and everything.

In February of this year Jim was recognized as a "Frequent Letter Writer" by The Fresno Bee where he expressed his opinions on a multitude of topics. Jim had a way that commanded attention. He often came across as a real tough guy, but those who knew him best knew otherwise. He was always finding people in need and doing his best to help them out.

Known to many as "Kohizer", he was a great American Patriot who loved his country deeply. He had a special place in his heart for the American military men and women.

Jim Kochheiser was a big man in so many ways. He gave, gave, and gave so much more of himself. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him as husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, wonderful friend, and patriot.

He passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in Madera, California.

Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years; his two daughters, and a son-in-law; his sister and her husband; a brother and his wife; a former wife; two step-daughters; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Jim's life was held at Hope Lutheran Church at Fresno and Barstow Avenues on Friday, August 13, 2010.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers that remembrances be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.
