Lorenzo Greer was one of my favorite students. All teachers have a couple! He actually stopped by the school to see me just four days before he tragically died from a rip current in Lake Michigan trying to save a friend. His body was missing for four days. During those four days his friends, family, teachers, and the community were shocked and no one had any closure. A candlelight vigil was scheduled on the fourth day of his body being missing. His body was found only hours before the vigil began.

The body of a 17 year old boy who drowned at Michigan City beach has been found. Lorenzo Greer's body was found just after 5 Thursday evening. It was spotted by an airplane two miles east of where he was last seen alive, which was near the pier lighthouse.

Greer and a companion, 14 year old Scott Hoover, had been swimming Sunday when they were pulled under by a strong rip current. Hoover's body was found Tuesday.

NewsCenter 16 followed DNR officers as they combed the beach and waters earlier today, and they explained the process of searching for Greer's body. "Normally if we make the recovery within the first 24 hours or so, we have a pin point location to work from. Right now we're to the point where because of the conditions, that really he could just about be anywhere here in the southern part of the lake," DNR Public Information Officer Gene Davis said. "We know that he's probably up off of the bottom now and in an upper layer of the water. So we have to just search the surface, and hopefully we'll find him there."

Some four hours Greer was found. His family had told NewsCenter 16 earlier Thursday that they weren't being told enough about the search efforts. Now all of those concerns, along with their young son, can finally be put to rest. A vigil for Greer was held Thursday, August 26th, at 7:00 at Batel Park. Around 200 people were in attendance, including many from Greer's school.

"He always had a big smile and he always made everybody laugh. He was that kind of kid and he always had a unique style about him. I could have seen him designing things, clothing, even hair styles, he changed all the time. Every time you saw him it was something new, a different color or something like that," said Teddi Kella, a teacher at Jefferson Intermediate.

The family of Scott Hoover also held a vigil at 7:00 on Thursday for their son at Deer Run Church of Christ in South Bend. Memorial services for Lorenzo Greer will be next Saturday, September 4th at 10 a.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in South Bend.
