James Patton Burkhart was a son of Morgan Tennessee Burkhart, who fought for the Union Army in the Civil War. Morgan Tennessee Burkhart enlisted with the rank of Captain & was discharged with the rank of Major because of actions taken during the War Between the States. James Patton, or "JP" as he was known all of his life, was born two years after the end of the war, on Nov 11th, 1867, one of six children. His mother, Mary Elizabeth (maiden name Wilkerson), died when he was only three years old and his father remarried when he was seven yrs. of age to a widow Mary M. (Vittatoe)Dalton. She and his father had one child as a result of that marriage, a daughter named Maggie. From all of the censuses I have found for him, he is noted as being a rural mail carrier in Knox County. At the age of 28 years, JP married Miss Agnes Underwood of Anderson County, Tennessee. Their wedding took place on Jan 6, 1896. She had been born Oct 13, 1876, so was nearly nine years younger than JP, but they loved each other and shared their strong faith in the Baptist church so age didn't seem to be an issue between them. The happy couple were blessed with four children between 1896 and 1903, bringing forth 2 sons and 2 daughters.
James McKinley, known as "Mack" was b.Jan 1st of 1897, just 5 days before their 1st wedding anniversary.
Their 2nd child, a daughter they named Grace, was b.Oct 5th, 1898.
Their 3rd child was another girl they named Myrtice Marie and nicknamed "Mercie" who was b.Sept 12th of 1900. The 1900 US Census, taken approx. June 1900 showed JP and "Mary A" (I assume she was going by Mary Agnes) living in Anderson County, Tennessee with little James and Grace, Myrtice Marie not having made her appearance into this world yet, as she arrived in September.
In 1902, Agnes was again "with child", and there is nothing noted regarding her health during her pregnancy, as was the way it was at that time.
Little William Morgan Burkhart was born on April 17th, 1903. Tragically, Agnes Underwood Burkhart left this world on Apr 25th, 1903, just eight days after her second son was born. The obituary states only that Agnes "died at her home after an illness of brief duration," One can only summize that she died of complications from childbirth. She was only 26 years old. JP Burkhart was now a widower with four small children to try to care for, despite his grief. At some point Agnes's mother, Mary C. Underwood, herself a widow, moved in to help care for the children so he could continue to work and support his family. But fate had one more tragedy set for J P. His baby boy, William Morgan Burkhart, passed away on June 9th, 1903 not quite two months after his birth. He was buried by his mother at Underwood Cemetery in Anderson County, Tennessee. JP raised the three remaining children and they all were successful in their endeavours as adults, well educated and well employed. JP never remarried. His only son, "Mack" married as did Grace. Myrtice Marie did not marry, but was well educated, well employed and led a rich life. James Patton Burkhart finally passed from this world on May 6th, 1940 at the age of 86. He was interred next to Agnes and little William at the Underwood Cemetery in Anderson County, Tennessee.
