HAMPTON - Quetta Braxton Spruell, the daughter of the late Warren and Mamie Braxton, was born Sept. 17, 1919, in Lanexa, Va. She departed this life Aug. 23, 2010, at the Northampton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
Quetta received her education in the public schools of New Kent County, Va. At an early age she accepted Christ and joined Ebenezer Baptist Church. Upon moving to Hampton, she joined First Baptist Church, where she served for more than 60 years.
Quetta loved to cook and her culinary skills were highly exemplified when she worked for Mrs. Elvira Barbour (a noted caterer). She also worked for Phillips's Seafood until her retirement.
We extend grateful appreciation to the staff of Northampton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center for the care given to Quetta during her stay.
Quetta was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Alphonzo Spruell; her sister, Elizabeth Weatherly; and her brother, Clarence Braxton.
She leaves to celebrate her life and memory her dedicated children, Brenda of Hampton, a son, Alphonzo Jr. (Janice) of Hampton; two grandchildren, Kellye of Hampton and William of Newport News; a great-granddaughter, Anissah; a sister, Alma Booth of Hampton; a brother, Warren Braxton (Pearl) of Hampton and a host of other family and friends.
A viewing will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home, 251 W. Queen Street, Hampton, Va. A celebration of Quetta's life will be held at noon Monday, Aug. 30, at First Baptist Church, 229 N. King Street, Hampton with the Rev. Dr. Richard Wills Sr., officiating. Internment will follow at Hampton Memorial Garden.
