Elmer Leslie Bennett was born in February 1821 in Richmond, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, the son of Caleb Bennett (1794-1875) and Sophia Hinds (1797-1893). He was married to Elvira Ide in Lehman, Pennsylvania on 4 April 1850. By the time of the 1860 census, Elmer, Elvira, and two sons, Cecil Eugene and James Lafayette, were living in Ontario, Illinois; Elmer was listed as a laborer and the family had real estate valued at $600 and a personal estate of $200. In 1865, following Elvira's death, Elmer married Hannah E. Wilmot (1832-1903), and the couple had at least five children. In 1870, Elmer was a grocer in Oneida, Knox County, Illinois; the family had real estate valued at $7,000 and a personal estate of $3,000. In 1880, the family was living in Copley, Knox County, Illinois, and Elmer was listed as a dentist. In 1900, Elmer, Hannah, and two of their children, were living in Sparta, Knox County, Illinois, and Elmer was listed as a druggist.
