Born on July 25, 1964, John is the son of Virginia Delucchi Maffeo of Oakland, California and Angelo Lawrence Maffeo, DDS, who precedes him in death.

Proud 1986 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, it was not unusual for John to greet family and friends with a hearty "Go Bears". He graduated from the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 1991.

John met his wife Marleen while both were completing Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno (UCSF) program.

Throughout his professional career, he championed the needs of the medically under-served patients of the San Joaquin Valley while working for the Veterans Administration Heath Care system, the Fresno Native American Health Center, and Sequoia Community Health Care Centers, where he last served as Chief Executive Officer.

John's vision led to the establishment of the Health Care for the Homeless Program and the Integrated Behavioral Health Program in Fresno.

John will be remembered for his keen intellect and lively wit, his service to the Valley, as a devoted family man, whose children always rose to meet his high standards of character and academic excellence. And of course, John will be remembered for his love of Cal football and all that a sense of school spirit represents.

The family especially wishes to thank Dr. Debra Garley and the staff at St. Agnes Medical Center for their compassionate and outstanding care.

John passed away on Monday, June 28, 2010, after a courageous year long battle with a rare bone marrow cancer, myelofibrosis and acute leukemia.

John is survived by many who held him dear. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 11 years, Dr. Marleen Coronel Maffeo, his two treasured children, two sisters, a brother and his spouse, a brother-in-law, many special aunts, uncles, cousins, a godson and friends, who will deeply miss John's presence as well.

A Mass of Christian Burial for John was Celebrated at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Clovis on Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Entombment followed at St. Peters Cemetery in the St. Joseph of Arimathea Mausoleum.

John wished that remembrances be made to the Central Valley Health Network http://www.cvhnclinics.org 1987 N. Gateway Blvd. #101, Fresno, Ca. 93727.
