Born in Fresno on September 24, 1921, Walter Edward Lambrecht lived a life of the stuff of legends. At only sixteen, he purchased his first ranch, and continued planting, cultivating, irrigating, and nurturing his crops with a shovel as his primary tool until his eighties.

He was a visionary, one of the first farmers to turn the alkali prairie of the Westside into lush farmland. He also had a special gift breeding and training thoroughbred horses and served as President of the California Horsemen's Association. One of his horses, Wildoath, won the only other match race in California aside from the famous Seabisquit event.

Walt's philosophy was the same for horses and people: race from behind, safely out of the pack, but with enough heart and drive to make it to the finish line first.

He retired late to the foothill land he loved near Friant where he resided for the final stretch of his earthly life.

Walt loved his family immensely and required the same of them as he did of his horses: stay safe, work hard, finish strong. Late in life he came to know Christ, who was his sustenance as Alzheimer's took over. The last years were beautiful, as the smallest things captivated him: a hawk in flight, the sunset, and the way water passed over the rocks in the creek, and lots of great grandbabies.

Walter Lambrecht will be remembered for his work ethic, dignity, his brilliant mind, his unending strength, his quirky eccentricities, and his sense of humor.

Walter, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on August 5, 2010.

He is survived by his adoring "Mama" of 61 years, Joanne Lambrecht, three children, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

His life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clovis on Friday, August 13, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church "Missions Fund" 12168 N. Willow Ave., Clovis, CA. 93612
