Robert Excell Fry was born March 19, 1885 at Louisiana , Pike County , Missouri , the son of James Robert and Virginia Enloe Fry.

Robert E. Fry attended Missouri Valley College from 1903 to 1907 where he received a bachelor of arts degree in March of 1907. He attended Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary from 1097 to 1910 and received his bachelor of divinity degree in July of 1910. Robert Fry also studied at the University of Louisville from 1909 to 1910, and from 1912 to 1913 he studied at Vanderbilt University . Robert Fry was ordained July 4, 1908 by the Salt River (USA) Presbytery. He was stated supply in Charlestown , Indiana from 1908 to 1910; and as pastor of Central Presbyterian Church of Owensboro, Kentucky from 1910 to 1911; and served as stated supply at Grace Presbyterian Church of Nashville, Tennessee from 1911 to 1913. In 1913 Robert Fry transferred to the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS) to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Gadsden, Alabama, from 1913 to 1918; he served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbus Mississippi from 1918 to 1919; and as pastor of Central Presbyterian Church of Mobile, Alabama from 1919 to 1922.

On June 16, 1912 Robert Excell Fry married Mary Elizabeth Owsley of Owensboro , Kentucky . The couple had one daughter, Elizabeth.

The First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff, Arkansas issued a letter of call to Rev. Robert E. Fry on June 5, 1922, and he delivered his first sermon in Pine Bluff on September 3, 1922. Mrs. Fry and their daughter, Elizabeth were received into membership from the Central Presbyterian Church of Mobile, Alabama. Robert Fry was installed on November 8, 1922. Rev. Fry and his family were the first to occupy the manse located at 1310 Olive in Pine Bluff . Rev. Fry received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Arkansas (now Lyon ) College in 1923.

Membership at First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff swelled during the pastorate of Rev. Fry. 553 members had been received into membership during Dr. Fry's eight years as minister, with 900 members on the rolls in 1930. The membership growth put a strain on the Church facility at Fifth and Walnut, and two attempts were made to construct a new Church. The first attempt was directed by the Session on September 30, 1925, and the second attempt was directed on January 3, 1928. The requirement that fifty percent of the needed funds be raised before construction could begin. Economic conditions prevented the securing of the funds and the plans were dropped.

On July 30, 1930, Dr. Robert Excell Fry received a call from the First Presbyterian Church of Duluth, Minnesota, and with deep regrets the Session unanimously agree to Fry's acceptance of the call, where he served from 1930 to 1933. Fry then served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Augusta, Georgia from 1933 to 1942, and pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, Florida.

Dr. Robert Excell Fry was the only living former pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Pine Bluff in 1958 during the Centennial Church celebration. Dr. Fry attended the centennial celebration where he spoke at the Centennial Dinner.

Dr. Fry died at the age of seventy nine on June 28, 1964, at Black Mountain , North Carolina . He is buried in Oak Forest Church Cemetery , Asheville , North Carolina .
