Son of Nathaniel and first wife Jane (Ware) Ballou, he was born January 12, 1779 at Partridgefield (now Peru), Berkshire, Massachusetts. A resident of Washington, Massachusetts for several years, he moved to New York in early 1818 and settled what was to be known as the town of Madrid. His occupation was mainly that of farmer.
He married 1) Susannah McKnight, 1804; 2) Mary Manly, 1828.
