Joseph Prem was born July 27, 1901 at Schömersdorf, Kreis Schwandorf, Oberpfalz, Bayern, Germany. He was the son of Michael Prem (from Sollitz, Kreis Schwandorf) and Anna Alt Prem (whose ancestors were from the lost town of Eixendorf in Kreis Schwandorf).

Joseph emigrated from Germany and sailed from Hamburg on the S.S. Mount Clay on August 9, 1923. The ship arrived at the Port of New York, USA, on August 20, 1923. He planned to join his uncle, J. A. Alt, at Plain, Wisconsin.

On May 8, 1928, Joseph Prem was married to Catherine Lehner at St. Luke Catholic Church, Plain, Sauk County, Wisconsin by Rev. Charles Surges. Witnesses were Joseph Lehner and Hilda Alt.

Joseph and Catherine purchased the Bartl and Frances Lehner home farm where they lived until retiring to Plain, Wisconsin in 1974. They had 12 children.

Catherine and Joseph took two trips to Germany, in July 1949 and August 1968 and visited relatives and friends in Schömersdorf. Schömersdorf was also birthplace of Catherine's father.

In 1958 or 1959, Joseph suffered a stroke. In April 1959 he was elected Justice of the Peace for Franklin Township, Sauk County, Wisconsin.

Joseph died on June 14, 1975. Funeral services were held at St. Luke's Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 16, the Rev. Raymond Keppler officiating.
