Olaf was born in Bergen, Norway to parents Hans and Christina Fjerstad. He came to the United States with his parents at age five and settled on a farm near Fosston, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Mr Fjerstad served his country as a member of the United States Army during the World War I. He entered the service June 4, 1918 and received his homorable discharge March 19, 1919.
He was united in marriage with Olga Halvorson April 22, 1930 in McIntosh. He farmed in the McIntosh-Fosston area until 1949 and then operated Hotel in McIntosh for about 15 years. He then rented out the property until it was purchased by the Highway Department.
He died at the Veterans Hospital - Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., Minnesota
