Steve Douglas Retired DISD Educator died at age of 97 A master educator, died Saturday, October 23, 2009 at age 97. Mr. Steve Douglas Gulley was born September 23, 1912 in Shuqualok, Mississippi to the union of Lish and Arlene Gulley. Steve received his early education from the East St. Louis, Illinois public schools. He graduated from Wiley College, Marshall, Texas in 1935. He received his Masters of Arts degree in history from Prairie View A&M University. Steve enjoyed a number of careers. He worked as a Pullman Porter for the railroad, and a bartender. In 1946, he was employed by the Dallas Independent School District. He served the District over 40 years, touching the lives of many young people, as a master teacher at Booker T. Washington High School, Assistant Principal at Paul Lawrence Dunbar and W.W. Bushman Elementary Schools and Principal at Julia C. Frazier Elementary School. He retired at the age of 77 years.
