TELL THE STORY · REMEMBER THE LIFE

Léocadie (Martin) Cormier was born on the family farm near the Quisibis River in present-day Ste-Anne-de-Madawaska, New Brunswick. One of 11 children (eight boys and three girls), she was the eldest daughter of Basile and Anastasie Martin.

Léocadie was nearly 26 years of age when she finally married, in those days a 'spinster'; but after their wedding, she and her husband settled on a farm in Saint-Léonard-Parent (his hometown) where Léocadie gave birth to eight children. Sadly, two of their five sons died as infants; and two of their three daughters died shortly after marrying, both at age 20, from complications related to childbirth.

Léocadie lived in the same house on the same farm for nearly seven decades — loving and teaching and nurturing many grandchildren in her golden years. Widowed at age 76, she survived her husband by 17 years and passed away in St- Léonard-Parent at the ripe ol' age of 93 — her cause of death being noted as 'faiblesse de la vieillesse et grippe' (weakness from old age and the flu). She had been predeceased by five of her children; but she had lived long enough to become a 'Mémère' to 51 grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. May she rest in peace.
