Entered the war as Lt. 8th Virginia Regiment Revolutionary War. Served in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and the siege of York. He protecting the passage of the American Troops and themselves in crossing the Yadkin with the loss of only nine men killed and five wounded.

After the war he moved to Wilkes Co. and in 1786 led a Georgia regiment against the Creek Indians.

John was the son of Thomas b 1714 and Lucy Graves b 1720. He married Catherine West in 1795, and they had a son named John Temple Graves.
