Newman T. Smith was a career military pilot. He was in the military for 24 years. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He served in the United States Air Force in Korea and in Vietnam, where he was a much-decorated B-52 bomber command pilot. He had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force.

He died at Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts on July 15, 1970. He was interred in the Gettysburg National Cemetery three days after he passed away, on July 18, 1970.
