Edward was very close to his father-in-law, so when John became ill Edward took very good care of him, taking him into his home and sitting with him every day to encourage him to get well. Then Edward himself became sick and died suddenly. The family was afraid to tell John that Edward had died, but it turns out they didn't have to. John died a week later. This was a very hard time for the family. Mamie losing her husband and her father within a weeks time was very tough.

Edward was quite the tease, and loved to play jokes on his wife, who didn't have the sense of humor that he had. Once when they were selling their home to move, he told Mamie that even though they did not drink Beer they would need to buy a keg for the auction, because that was the custom. Mamie told him in no uncertain terms that she would not have beer on around her house, custom or not and that she would take an ax to the keg if he brought one home. Well, Edward left to run to town, when he was away from the house he took a large empty keg to the river to fill with water. When he returned he picked up the keg and brought it up to the house. Mamie saw the key and went wild, I told you what I'd do if you brought that stuff to this home she yelled. Then went to the barn, got the ax and went about chopping the keg. Edward was laughing his gut out watching his wife, then she realized he had tricked her. Every male in the family line seems to have inherited this gene!
