UPDATE, JULY 2019:

I continue to receive conflicting details about Phoebe; I still cannot say whether Phoebe was a war casualty, or whether she in fact lived until 1980, and perhaps I have two individuals' information blending into one file. Any thoughts or assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE 10, APRIL 2016: I have received the below information from Denise, regarding Phoebe's marriage to Johnny; after researching the lead as well, I do believe this information correct and am grateful to Denise for the assistance and hard work on this specific family! =)

John W Payne
Possible Partners: Phoebe E Bailey ... District: Portsmouth ... County: Hampshire ...
Year: 1934 ... Quarter: Oct-Dec ... Volume: 2b ...
Page: 1211 ... Volume: 2b ... Page: 1211

UPDATE 15 February 2016: I have received a very possibly solid lead that l have had mistaken and incorrect information on Phoebe, and l will be correcting and pretty much re-doing her page over the next few weeks as l receive requested vital certificates, etc. Great, great thanks to Sharlene for her help on discovering this elusive lady's story!

Phoebe Elizabeth Payne is listed at the HMS Hood website as the widow of John "Johnny" Payne, who was one of 1415 men to go down on the HMS Hood the morning of 24, May 1941 when the German battleship Bismarck sank Hood with one torpedo to the ship's ammunition magazine.

There were only three survivors.

There is also a "Brenda Payne" noted in paperwork regarding Phoebe, and a three year old child, Brenda Payne, has in fact been found listed as among the War Civilian Dead in England, but her year of death is 1941. I have Brenda listed only as a possible family member at this time, because I cannot find the 'link'.

This memorial will be updated as soon as possible - all thoughts and assistance will be greatly appreciated! NOTE: The photo originally on this page is in my possession should anyone like a copy; l have removed it for now, however while we verify whether it is Phoebe, or a relative (l just received a message that it might be her aunt or mother).
