Nahum was the twin brother of Thomas Sullivan, and they were sons of Arthur Bull Sullivan and Margaret Dunn of New Brunswick, New Jersey. Nahum was in the dry goods importing business his entire life, having entered into that profession in 1843. He was married in Montclair, New Jersey on 28 December 1843 to Sarah M. Runyon, the daughter of Mordecai T. Runyon and Isabella C. Martin. Nahum and his wife spent their adult lives in Montclair. They are buried together in the Sullivan plot at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.
